Photos show beloved icon Dolly Parton in Las Vegas over the years

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Global icon Dolly Parton passed away at 80 years old, her family announced on Tuesday. Her death followed months of health concerns, which led to the cancellation of planned Las Vegas shows.

The beloved country music icon died peacefully in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, her publicist said in a statement obtained by Nexstar. She was born in east Tennessee on Jan. 18, 1946.

“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” Bryan Seaver, Parton’s nephew, said in a video posted to her social media accounts on Tuesday. “As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.”

“It is an honor. An honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness,” he continued. “But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly. Dolly has lived in the light, and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens.”

Dolly was well-known worldwide for her sparkling personality and even sparklier outfits. She wrote hundreds of songs, including classics like “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” that totaled more than 100 million worldwide sales and more than 1 billion online streams.

Shortly after her death was announced, President Donald Trump ordered flags to be flown at half-mast for one week starting at 6 p.m. ET in her honor.

The singer made many appearances in Las Vegas over the years. In the early 1980s, Parton played nearly two dozen shows at the Riviera Hotel, her first Las Vegas residency. In 1993, she headlined four concerts at the Mirage.

Additionally, the “Jolene” singer made appearances throughout the years at Las Vegas events, such as conventions and award shows.

In June 2025, Dolly announced her grand return to Las Vegas with “Dolly: Live in Las Vegas” at Caesars Palace in December 2025. It was meant to be Parton’s first extended Vegas run in 32 years.

In September 2025, Parton postponed the six-night concert series that was set to light up The Colosseum. At the time, Parton said she was dealing with some health challenges, and her doctors said she had to have a few procedures.

The December dates were then rescheduled to September 2026.

Then, in May 2026, Parton announced that she was “responding well” to meds and treatments, but she had to cancel the previously delayed shows.

Earlier this month, Parton skipped the opening of a new ride at her theme park, Dollywood, telling fans in a video that her doctor had advised her not to travel.

With 55 Grammy nominations and 10 wins, Parton is the third-most nominated woman in Grammy history, only behind Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.
