LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The 61-year-old male driver of a vehicle involved in a crash on Tuesday morning was pronounced dead at a Las Vegas hospital, according to police.
The collision involving two SUVs occurred just before 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Harvard Street. The area is just west of Decatur Boulevard, north of Interstate 11.
Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicated that a 2000 GMC Yukon driven by the 61-year-old man was westbound on Vermont Avenue in the only west travel lane. A 2000 Chevrolet Suburban was stopped facing south at a stop sign on Harvard Street in the only south travel lane, police said.
A preliminary investigation found the collision occurred when the GMC Yukon was completing a left U-turn and, for unknown reasons, continued turning left 360 degrees and collided into the Chevrolet Suburban, pushing it into a light pole on the northwest corner.
Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the driver of the Yukon to the University Medical Center’s Trauma Center. The driver of the Yukon was pronounced deceased by medical staff.
Police said the Suburban driver remained at the scene, showed no signs of impairment, and cooperated with the investigation. The driver later self-transported to an area hospital for minor injuries. A juvenile passenger in the Suburban did not have any injuries.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Collision Investigation Section is awaiting the Clark County Coroner’s investigation and determination for cause and manner of death.
The collision remains under investigation.
Police said the intersection is shut down in all directions as traffic officers investigate. Impairment is not suspected at this time.
