LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man who served prison time in Nevada for voluntary manslaughter was arrested on Aug. 11 in the parking lot of High Desert Prison northwest of Las Vegas after a corrections officer was threatened with a screwdriver.
Cory Tyler Nixon, 32, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, destruction of property ($250-$5,000), and driving with a suspended driver’s license, according to a Nevada State Police arrest report. Troopers also linked him to another incident on July 24 outside the prison.

Nixon was arrested when Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded to an Aug. 11 call at the prison, about 40 miles northwest of Las Vegas on U.S. 95. The corrections officer arrived in the parking lot at about 3:35 p.m., and he noticed a red SUV circling the lot. The officer was at the back of his vehicle with the trunk open when a man approached him, according to his statement in the report.
The man started talking to him, but the officer didn’t understand what he was saying. The man began to get aggressive, and at one point slammed the trunk shut. The officer told him to back away, and the man pulled a screwdriver from his pocket and tried to strike him, according to the report.
The officer was able to open his trunk again, and he grabbed his department-issued baton. The man returned to the red SUV and left the property. The officer contacted prison staff and advised them to call Nevada Highway Patrol.
Troopers were told that the suspect had pulled a gun on the officer, but he confirmed it was a screwdriver when he spoke to troopers.
The vehicle was spotted southbound on U.S. 95, and a trooper stopped the SUV in a “high-risk traffic stop.” Another trooper arrived as the SUV was stopped, and two troopers detained the driver.
While troopers interviewed the officer, they found a report from July 24 that described a man matching Nixon’s description throwing a large rock through the windshield of an Audi sedan that belonged to a doctor who was at the prison. Before that, the man had walked into the facility and threatened guards.
Nixon was taken to the Clark County Detention Center for booking, but he is no longer in custody there.
